Very Sexy Makeup: Limited-edition Heidi Collection

Remember Heidi Klum's glamorous appearance on the Emmy Awards in September? Her old Hollywood glamour was stunning on that night. The makeup, the dress plus the hair style made a statement. The dress she chose was an burgendy-red gown by Dior. The makeup was kept simple and elegant: full brows, muted face with bright red lips. In fact, her makeup at the Emmy was done with pieces from her new line for Victoria’s Secret, limited-edition Heidi Klum Very Sexy Makeup Collection, and from other Very Sexy pieces. The Heidi Klum collection is officially now available at the Victoria's Secret website. I think the colors of the collection are feminine, sparkling and glamorous. It is a very Heidi style that I like!

Take a look: Limited-edition Heidi Collection Mosaic Eyeshadow ($18): It comprises of four shades from light to dark. I love the combination of soft and strong colors.

Limited-edition Heidi Collection Glitter Eye Liner ($10): bronze glitter over black liner

Limited-edition Heidi Collection Perfect Lipstick ($12): lip color in nude tone

Limited-edition Heidi Collection Lip Gloss ($12):shimmery nude gloss with a taste of chocolate flavor

New lip balms

I have to admit I am a lip balm addict. A good excuse for my addicted behavior is my lips easily cracked in the cold and dry weather. The best way to prevent my lips from drying out and peeling off is to always keep a lip balm handy with me. I always have 2 to 3 types of lip balms for different purposes of lip care. Normally at daytime, I would go for something with a lighter texture and with SPF (especially for the summer time). At night before hitting the sack, I would prefer a creamy and thick lip balm.

Previously, I have blogged about my all-time favorite Apivita Propoline Lip Aids-Rose. It provides a beautiful pink tinted color with enough moisturization. Carmex lip balm (the original version) is my ultimate drug store find to keep my lips nice and supple throughout the night. Lately, I have been researching for new lip balms since my Carmex lip balm is running low. It is amazing to find out two of the American brands have released new versions of their classic lip balms.

Kiehl's is releasing a series of limited-edition lip blam #1(o.5 fl oz tube for $8.50). The lip balm provides SPF 4 sun protection to relieve cracked or chapped lips. It is now available in 3 limited-edition flavors: Pear, Cranberry, and Mint. I would like to get a chance to try how the three flavors smell like.

Carmex has come up with their popular jar and tube lip balms in a cherry flavor. In fact, the cherry flavor came to the market in the stick form last year. The Carmex Cherry Jar and Carmex Cherry Tube with SPF 15 sun protection have been available in drug stores since summer. I had used the original Carmex lip balm last winter. The original formulation could calm and soothe my cracked and peeling lips. I especially like the thick and moist texture that effectively heal my chapped lips. I was just about getting a new tube of the original version since the local weather here has dropped to 45 degrees. I hope the new one offers the same level of hydration with a flattering cherry flavor.

ck Calvin Klein Beauty's Offical Website

I just stumbled across the newly launched ck Calvin Klein Beauty website. So far, there isn't a lot information available. I have heard a lot about ck Calvin Klein Beauty product launch in Hong Kong, Taiwan...etc (lucky girls who live in those areas!). I wish to see the website updated with their product lines and detail information before it hits the shelves in the US. Please stay tuned and I will update more if I find anything new. In the mean time, check out the website:

Yves Saint Laurent Limited Edition La Laque

I have been keeping an eye on the holiday collections of the season. Western brands like Yves Saint Laurent, Dior...etc do provide fancy packagings and sparkling colors that really attract me. Many of them, however, have very similar makeup colors that I already have. (I found myself more inclined to a few Japanese brand holiday collections. I should reveal which holiday collection that have caught my eyes on a separate post.) Yves Saint Laurent's Limited Edition La Laque - Starry Dream #145 ($18) is one of the two nail shades from YSL's latest holiday collection. Starry Dream is a transparent shade full of subtle silver glitters. I like the fine silvery particles that are bright and glamorous. Though, it is not over glittery which is totally in an understatedly stylish way. It makes a statement at evening occasions. Remember that it is a transparent-based color. The more coats you put on, the more density is filled with silver shimmer. Three coats or more create the best effect of density! The picture shown above is with five coats on. I didn't put on any top coat for protection. I am surprised to find out the color has remained quite intact and impeccably beautiful after three days. The formulation is basically fast-drying. As long as you give it enough time to dry out, you shouldn't worry too much about any drag mark or any unpleasant scratch mark.

The silver appearance delivers a pearly-silver or metallic-silver shine depending on you are under natural light or shade. I think the color stands out with every type of skin tone. Not to mention the color really pops out in deep outfits.

Pink October: nail colors of soft pink

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. There are many cosmetics and skin-care companies joining the Pink October events in support of breast cancer awareness and research. Essie and OPI also have created special limited editions of soft-pink nail lacquers. I always love to have my manicure done to show the pretty pink and to support the power of pink.

The Pink Is Powerful ($7) from Essie is a pale pink with slightly shimmer. 10% of its sales profits will be donated to the Entertainment Industry Foundation's Women's Cancer Research Fund during the month of October.

OPI has its pink version with Pink of Hearts Nail Lacquer ($7.50). This is a light pink color, which has been created exclusively to raise fund for Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation.

Valentino says goodbye: Spring 2008 ready-to-wear

(Photograph: Francois Guillot/AFP)

Valentino Garavani is one of my all-time favorite high-fashion designers. The 75-year-old Italian designer is considered as last of the great fashion designers from a great era. His works, impeccably combining refined embroidery with elegant cutting, always have the class with a feminine style. For me, Valentino has a beautiful image of scarlet gowns, white wedding dresses, flower prints and bows in my head. After 45 years in fashion, it is sad for all the Valentino lovers to learn that he is leaving the fashion industry. He will retire in January 2008 after his final haute couture collection.

"You have to stop one day. I want to enjoy myself, do other things. I've always been shut up in my fashion house, drawing hundreds and hundreds of sketches every season. I want to stop while I am at the top", said Valentino [from the Daily Telegraph]

I have been anticipating his final ready-to-wear pieces in Paris. On October 3rd, 2007 , that was the very last time we saw his name appear on the ready-to-wear runway. This farewell collection was a tribute to his love of fashion for his whole life. At the end of the show, he received a standing ovation from the crowd. He deserves the ultimate respect and applauds for his whole life dedication to fashion.

I enjoy the Valentino's spring 2008 collection very much. It has been his best collection ever. It was timeless, elegant yet young and playful. There were lots of colorful and youthful colors. His signature red evening gowns were still iconic and powerful. In addition, I was very impressed to see so many beautiful long or short frocks in soft pink or a mix of pink and purple. There were many black-and white, yellow, red and chiffon dresses with big polka dots prints. Not to mention lots of bows, ruffles and twisted pleatings were embroidered in details. Mr. Valentino Garavani, I salute you.

Chanel Nail Color in Magnolia Rose - Part 2

Chanel's Nail Color in Magnolia Rose is a soft pink shade with tiny glittering particles. The color looks from the bottle and on the nails look are quite consistant. The soft pink shade is very pigmented and more to the pastel side. You are probably asking "How come the composition of shimmering particles doesn't turn the finish more to the pearly-pink side?"
Well, that is because the formulation is created to make the shimmer blend within the pinky shade; more in a subdued way of reflecting the glittering colors of silver, green and fuchsia. Thus, the shimmer actually makes the pastel shade more alive. Magnolia Rose nail color is indeed a refined and graceful shade, which is very "Chanel." I am glad I bought the very last bottle from the department store.

Chanel Nail Color in Magnolia Rose

I have finally bought the Chanel Nail Color in Magnolia Rose today. The limited-edition shade belongs to Chanel's fall colors this season, and the rest of the collection are Tulipe Noir (deep plum ), Lotus Rough ( pink plum ), and Lily Beige (soft beige). Among them, Tulip Noir stirred a frenzy and has been sold out everywhere since it was released in July. However, I am surprised to know that Magnolia Rose (soft rose) and Lotus Rough are still available online at Neiman Marcus website. You might want to hurry if you are interested!

Recently, I have been checking Chanel counters for Chanel Nail Color in Magnolia Rose. I was always told it is no longer available in stores. The reason I got lucky today at Bloomingdale was because that very last bottle I bought was from a late shipment. Otherwise, I'd have missed it. I will put up some photos later and let you know why I like this color so much! Please check back !

Halloween dress-up ideas!

Many of you are probably going to a Halloween party next weekend. Me too! I have been thinking very hard for my Halloween dress-up and prep-up next weekend. My choice of costume is still pending. However, here are some thoughts I have been running for accessorizing and accenting my costume.

(Detail shot of Christian Dior fall 2007 ready-to-wear from: http://www.style.com/)

1. Reverse French manicure
Pass the hot pink and true red nail colors! Bold and deep shades would be better nail choices for the Halloween party. I am thinking to have my nails done a reverse French manicure this time. Not only it is edgy enough for the spooky theme of Halloween party, it is also a hot nail trend in the fall. We have seen OPI, Dior fall runway 2007, and Hollywood celebrities showing the reverse French manicure in rich and deep colors. Either you can stick with the classy black-and-white, or you can play with colors. A pair of contrast shades (yellow Vs purple, red Vs. green) definitely can create a little drama at the party night.

2. MAC Halloween
If you plan to accent your scary look by makeup, the MAC Halloween offers ideas you can pick up. You may check out more makeup details for different looks at the MAC website.

(Photo of John Galliano fall 2007 ready-to-wear from: http://www.style.com/)

3. Colorful stockings
No matter how you would like to dress up as, colorful stockings highlight the look in the dark. It is also a big accessory in fall 2007. Unlike the costume you buy might go to ebay for re-sale immediately after the party, colorful stockings can be practically worn more ways than one this season.

Jill Stuart Christmas Rose collection 2007

Jill Stuart is going to launch its Christmas Rose collection 2007 on November 10 in Japan. I am drooling by just looking at the pictures! Jill Stuart always comes up with quality cosmetics in beautiful packaging. Their packaging is constantly designed with diamond-shape, bejeweled box, crystal and pink color which I find romantic and feminine. I love the effort of this company to produce good quality products with elegant and princessy packaging. It brings me the pretty and the luxurious excitement everytime I use it! Unfortunately, Jill Stuart is currently only available in Japan. For Jill Stuart lovers who live outside of Japan, shopping online is probably the only way at this point. Many thanks to A Touch of Blusher article on Newsflash! Possible Jill Stuart Cosmetics Launch in the US ! I am looking forward to the launch of Jill Stuart in the US.

The limited-edition set for this Christmas collection includes:
  1. Brilliance eyes rose box: lined up with four eye shadows.
  2. Shimmer tint face color #100 rose glow
  3. Lip gloss #102 rose gleam
  4. Nail care oil: to provide moisture for damaged cuticles and hydrates the cuticles and nails
  5. Satin pouch
  6. Fragrance choker: to keep your favorite scent!

Anna Sui Christmas Collection - Part 1

The upcoming Anna Sui Christmas Collection 2007-Part 1 is glistening and adorable! I especially like the face powder both in pink and in orange. The inner circle is the cheek powder while the outer circle works to highlight or brighten the other area of the face. Anyway, here is a list of items for Anna Sui Christmas collection
  1. Super mascara glitter: available in four colors
  2. Color powder: available in two shades
  3. Nail color: available in five colors
  4. Makeup kit: includes a lipgloss, face powder in a pouch. The lipgloss and face powder are released in two color versions: one in pink, the other in orange.

MAC for McQueen - Part 3: McQueen Kohl Power Eye Pencil

McQueen kohl power eye pencil ($13.50) has an extremely soft texture that makes it very easy to apply. It comes in three different colors: Black Karat (black with gold pearl), Jealous (back with green pearl) and Feline (black). All of them are intense and rich colors to provide a deep and full opaque coverage.

Black Karat has a black-gold finish. Jealous offers a shade of green-black. For people who prefer a soft-toned kohl effect, Black Karat and Jealous are probably good choices. They are not glittery at all. The formulation of gold and green pearl tones down the kohl black to look more glamourous and mysterious in the fall/winter! Feline is rich black without any shimmer. It is probably the "blackest " black in the MAC eye liner series. It defines the eyes with color intensity and dramatic precision! I still haven't decided which to bring home between Black Karat and Feline. Please feel free to share your thought if you have one.

I find the Kohl power eye pencil is versatile to apply. It is very easy to line eyes while you can still use it to blend or smudge for a smoky eye finish! It glides on smoothly without any trouble dragging or hurting the skin. The only downside of this eye pencil is it is non water-proof. I would skip lining the lower lashline to save the color from migrating off the base of the lower lash. To sum it up, I love McQueen kohl power eye pencil! It helps me to glam up easily!

MAC for McQueen - Part 2: Eye Shadow "Haunting"

As I mentioned on my MAC for McQueen post, McQueen is probably the only one makeup collection that I have been really impressed so far this year. With high anticipation and curiosity, I headed to a MAC store yesterday. I am pleased how the McQueen collection presents the intensely-exotic colors that are suitable for either a bold/edgy or a toned-down approach.

The eye shadows and paint pots are really eye-catching! "Pagan" (yellow lime green with yellow pearl eye shadow) and "Nile" (royal blue with white pearl eye shadow) are lovely. Since I am a big lover of turquoise and also a huge fan of Elizabeth Taylor's "Cleopatra" makeup look, I have decided to test out "Haunting" ($14) and "Otherworldly" ($16.50)! Both "Haunting" and "Otherworldly" look beautiful! The first one is eye shadow powder and the latter one is creamy eye shadow. They are both turquoise-based shades. However, Haunting is with subtle shimmer. A thin layer of application will reflect a hint of silver and light blue-green. With layers of application, it goes on aqua blue with a satin finish.

On the other hand, "Otherworldly" goes on matte, pastel and high-pigmented. It presents more to the blue side compared to "Haunting". I think it is a beautiful shade but the texture is creamy (maybe a little sticky). When I try to apply a second layer of other eye shadow powder on top of "Otherworldly", the eye makeup looks a little smudgy. The McQueen collection of paint pots is probably perfect to wear solo. If you really want to blend with other eye shadows for a mixed color, you should use creamy eye shadows or with liquid textures.

I was tempted to bring "Overworldly" home. After some thoughts, I decided to buy "Haunting" only. It is an easy-to-wear beautiful turquoise shade and doesn't have a season. I am excited to come up with some makeup idea to attend the coming Halloween party! Another review regarding McQueen Kohl Power Eye Pencil will be posted on Part 3. Please stay tuned!

Updated on October 15, 2007:
A Touch of Blusher also got the eye shadow of "Haunting". I encourage you to take a look at her review for an alternative view on this product!

MAC for McQueen

McQueen is a collaborative collection by designer Alexander McQueen and MAC Cosmetics for Alexander Mcqueen's fall 2007 runway show. The 16-piece limited-edition collection is inspired by Elizabeth Taylor’s “Cleopatra” look. With this dramatic and powerful inspiration, the collection features pale nude lips, vivid-colored eye shadows and cat's eyes.

I am somewhat obsessed with the bold Egypt-inspired makeup after watching the HBO TV drama series "Rome" last year. And the McQueen collection has impressed me the most than all the other makeup collections released by MAC so far this year. I like the combination of blues, greens, gold and dark black kohl! I think the colors are vibrant and practical. It can be applied either in a strong or understated way for the fall/winter. I can't wait to head to the department store to see how the colors present. The gorgeous McQueen collection will launch tomorrow on October 11th in the US.

Kelly Calèche by Hermès

Kelly Calèche is the highly-anticipated fragrance newly released by Hermès this year. It is their first release since Eau des Merveilles in 2004 and was created by the international acclaimed in-house perfumer, Jean-Claude Ellena. In fact, Hermès is one of the few perfume brands that have an exclusive in-house perfumer.

Kelly Calèche (1.6 fl. oz eau de toilette spray for $75; 3.3 fl. oz for $110) is named after two famous icons of Hermès: Calèche, the women's fragrance by Hermès and the classic Kelly handbag. The Paris-based brand was originally a saddlery company since it was founded in 1837. Till today, the company has expanded their business to different lines of design and has been well-known for its scarves, leather goods, ready-to-wear design and fragrances.

The original Calèche was created by Guy Robert in 1961 with a delicate rose and woody base notes. Mr. Ellena was inspired by the Hermès heritage to bring the Calèche floral scents and the fine notes of Hermès leather goods for a floral leather fragrance. According to osmoz.com, top notes are: green notes, lily-of-the-valley, rose and narcissus. Middle notes: climbing rose, mimosa, tuberose. Base notes: iris, woodsy notes, leather accord.

I particularly like the modern and somehow ladylike bottle design. With the inspiration of the Kelly bag, Kelly Calèche is also designed with a silver metal clasp at the neck of the bottle. The metal clasp can move upward and downward to lock (or unlock) the stopper. For me, the fragrance is indeed complex and sophisticated. The first spray is an ethereal sensation! I can smell first smell a hint of grapefruit scent, then it is followed by fruity and floral scents. It isn't too hard to find the scent of narcissus, tuberose, rose and the hidden woody notes. After a couple hours, a soft scent of fine leather starts to appear. Overall, the scents are not overwhelming. The flowery scents with underlying green and woody notes makes Kelly Calèche subtle and understatedly elegant. I personally would wear it for mostly daytime occasions.

Shu Uemura Cleansing Oil Premium A/I Sneak Peek

Shu Uemura has released a new cleansing oil called Cleansing Beauty Oil Premium A/I (9450 yen or about USD $81 for 450ml;3570 yen or USD $31 for 150mL). It has been launched in Japan since September 1st 2007. The is Shu Uemura's first bottle of medicinal makeup removal that is formulated with Asian plant ingredients and Western herbs for dry and fragile skin. The rich oil is infused with ingredients such as lavender, chamomile, avocado oil and bergamot; such ingredients are to soothe, calm the skin and as well as to reverse the signs of aging.

This east meets west product looks like a perfect solution for my skin type. I would love to check it out when it is available in the US. I will try to update more details on this new version of cleansing oil.

Pretty lip palette: Clé de Peau Lip Compact & Camélias de Chanel

Clé de Peau Lip Compact

The new Clé de Peau Lip Compact ($65) uses light technology to enhance the dimensions of lips. It comes with a rich lipstick and a light lip gloss. After you wear the lipstick, you could use the lip gloss to highlight the center of lips. It comes in three sets of colors. I really like this lip compact (showed above in the pic) becuase the translucent lip gloss just looks like a multi-faceted diamond. How pretty! However, from their website, I couldn't figure out what it means by "light technology" and how it supposedly works. I wish I could get more information about how the so-called "light technology" helps to create the magic. At this point, that's all I can get from the website.

EXCLUSIVE CREATION: Les 4 CAMÉLIAS DE CHANEL
Every season, Chanel Beaute creates a makeup product inspired by its founder Coco Chanel. In this season, Les 4 CAMÉLIAS DE CHANEL lip palette ($65) is inspired by the iconic Chanel camellia, which was Coco Chanel's signature flower. The four cream lipsticks in rose, sheer rose, lustrous white, and plum are beautifully in the shape of camellia. You can either apply it alone or blend well to make the color you like. The packaging is so sleek and adorable and the colors are gorgeous! However, I don't know if I'd use the lip palette because that will mess up all those pretty camellia shapes.

New product: Benefit Powder Pop

It is always exciting when holiday season is coming. Many cosmetics companies specially design new and limited-edition collections. Benefit repackages three of their famous powders: Dallas (rosy bronze), Hoola (bronze), and Dandelion (soft pink) all in one box, called Powder Pop ($30). I personally own every of their face powders for cheeks (from Dandelion, Georgia, 10, Hoola to Dallas). I am having a blast with these! It is a nice variety of shades from light to deep, matte to shimmery, cold to warm. They are all flattering colors with great blending ability to transition a daytime makeup to nighttime look! I am glad they release this limited-edition Powder Pop, which contains three of Benefit's cheek colors. For customers like me always take long time deciding which among what to purchase at cosmetics counters in department stores, this has-it-all little box is the best choice. Powder Pop has the shades that are all nice and easy to apply. Dandelion is a light pink color with very fine shimmer. Hoola is a bronze matte color. Dallas is a combination of bronzer and blush and it goes on rosy-bronze. If you have been tempted to try out Benefit's cheek powders, Powder Pop is recommended for you to blush, bronze and highlight the face! It is currently available at Sephora.

Saks Beauty Event

Ladies, Saks Beauty Event is coming again! You'll receive a black patent tote that comes with deluxe sample gifts with any cosmetics or fragrance purchase of $100. It is available from Oct 1st to Oct 14th online at Saks.com, and October 4th to Oct 13rd in stores. This is a good time to stock up some of your favorite fall pieces!

Here are a few things that caught my eyes:

Love Collection-the newest collection from YSL:

1.Yves Saint Laurent Make-Up Palette:($67)includes three eye shadows, three lipsticks, one gloss, one highlighter and a blush
2. Yves Saint Laurent Lip Make-Up Palette: ($62) includes a lipstick and a shimmering lip gloss. This heart-shape palette is inspired by a jewelry piece Mr. Saint Laurent wanted his favorite model to wear in fashion shows. The case of lip color is in white gold metal and is decorated with Swarovski crystals.

3. Yves Saint Laurent Compact Powder:($52) includes two soft powders in Pink Beige and Rose Whisper

Laura Mercier Chocolate Vanilla Eye Collection:($75):includes a Chocolate and Vanilla palette. The Chocolate palette has: Chocolate, Truffle, Praline and Chocolate Crème Eye Color. The Vanilla palette has: Creme Vanilla, Vanilla Nuts, Buttercreme and Vanilla Pearl Eye Color. I like this collection. The colors look mild and warm. From the picture, the colors of the Chocolate palette are deep and to deliver an intense and smoky eye makeup. The Vanilla palette is loaded with a range of rich and creamy shades that make the eyes look softer and lighter.

P.S Kiss for Lancome Unpacking

I've received my P.S.Kiss lipstick (for Lancome) last weekend. As you can see from the picture above, the lipstick is packaged beautifully. The lipstick looks deep brown-red when I first open up Lancome's signature Color Fever lipstick case. But it goes on bright red with a hue of dark wine when only a layer of lip color is applied. As another layer is put on, the red looks more deep burgundy and intense. I can see the brown undertone give the color a little warmer and more vibrant hue. Different techniques and numbers of layers of lip shade create different results. All are elegant and sensual to go with rich fashions in the fall and winter.

It is a very pretty rich shade with a hydrating texture to give a matte pigment. It is long-lasting and doesn't cause feathering! I have never been a big fan of deep red lipstick. However, P.S.Kiss blew my mind! I love this color. It is definitely a striking combination of stronger make-up, rich outfits and the P.S.Kiss lipstick in the cold holiday season.

If you love this color like I do, you still can get it at Nordstrom starting today. For those of you that are not close to the target locations, P.S.Kiss is now available on lancome-usa.com :)
